However, our research demonstrated that though otherwise dermally inactive, they definitely show action on hair follicle – the exponentially multiplying hair matrix cells. The ultimate result is hair follicle dystrophy.

This breakthrough technology relates to inhibition of hair growth using plant derived cytotoxic lectins.

Topical application of these actives results in

     1. substantial reduction in number of re-growing hair

     2. slower rate of re-growth of hair

     3. increased interval between two hair removal sessions

     4. smaller, thinner and lighter re-growing hair, effectively resulting in reduction in pain of hair removal e.g. by waxing

This efficacy can be measured qualitatively and quantitatively by Trichoscan or Digital microscope.

We have developed this cosmetic powered by the extract of Castor seeds. The delivery system for castor seed extract to hair follicle was developed by Bio-Med Engineering Department of IIT Mumbai under the TePP grant by Department of Science and Technology under Ministry of Science and Technology of Government of India

Drug development route:

Plant derived cytotoxic lectins such as Ricin and Abrin have been studied extensively as chemotherapeutic agents. Ricin represents Type II RIPs (Ribosome Inactivating Proteins). Other family members also happened to covered in the intellectual property claimed for.

The poster relating to technology was presented at World Congress for Hair Research WCHR 2013 at Edinburgh and paper published in Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

With right resources aligned the aim can be corrected upwards and other directions as well for spin off products from the family.
